Grandmother Sends the Moravian Church – Greensboro, North Carolina (1931)

Miss Beverly Scott lived in Baltimore, the large commercial city on the Chesapeake Bay in central Maryland.

In April of 1931, Beverly received a postcard photograph from Grandmother.

Grandmother mailed the postcard from a railroad station connected to Greensboro, North Carolina.

The face of the postcard is a view of the “Home Church” of the Moravian community in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Residents of Pennsylvania who may be aware of the Moravian settlement of Bethlehem, and the founding of the town of Lititz, may not recognize that comparable communities of Moravians settled around (what was then called) Salem, North Carolina.

I have several postcards related to the Moravian community at Winston-Salem – because I am a keen admirer of Nicholas, Count Zinzendorf and of the egalitarian, pacifist, tolerant, and learned community that he shepherded through the horrors of the religious wars in Europe.

On the reverse, Grandmother praises the beauty of Spring.

She writes, “It is perfectly lovely. Everything in bloom.”

“The flowers”, Grandmother notes, “are beautiful”.

It is not clear if the visit was related to some problem or emergency, but Grandmother reports, “Daddy and all well.”

Beverly preserved the postcard in good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that Grandmother returned safely, that all continued in good health, and that Beverly would some day see the charming area around Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
