In January of 1935, Nelson Godfrey lived in Shrewsbury, PA in the household of H.S. Godfrey, whom I assume to be his father.
Shrewsbury is a pretty town in southern York County.
For his birthday, Nelson received a congratulatory postcard from his Sunday School teacher, Martha Sweitzer.
Ms. Sweitzer mailed the postcard from New Freedom, PA, a town south of Shrewsbury, on the border of Maryland.
(In the Category, “Sunday School and Church, one can find a Rally Day postcard from the New Freedom Reformed Church – I do not know if Nelson was a member of that Sunday School.)
The postcard, printed in the US, features a verse expressing a pious wish for a long and wholesome life for Nelson.
The postage stamp, issued in 1933, commemorates the “Century of Progress” exhibition in Chicago.
This was second great exhibition held in Chicago, and it celebrated the centennial of the city’s founding.
(These cancelled stamps are not valuable, but are not commonly seen).
One hopes that Nelson enjoyed his birthday and that his life fulfilled the hopes of his Sunday School teacher.
(Nelson was born about 1927 and died in 2014. He was eight years old when he received his birthday postcard.)
Martha Sweitzer, née Keeny, was born in 1874; she would have been about 60 years old when she was Nelson’s Sunday School teacher. Martha died in 1951.)
