Hazel at the New Year – circa 1908

This postcard photograph was not mailed and lacks any indication of the studio that printed the charming picture.

An inscription on the reverse contains a greeting for the New Year and a name:

“Wishing you a Happy New Year, Hazel Amelia Harmon”.

I assume that the name is that of the little girl in her winter attire, but it is possible that this is the name of an adult who was sharing a photograph of a daughter.

Hazel sports a bonnet that covers most of her head;  her substantial muff will keep her hands warm.

The coat is trimmed in fur, and Hazel seems to be wearing a high shoe or boot.

The cold-weather outfit looks substantial and effective.

One hopes that Hazel Amelia enjoyed the New Year and had success and happiness in the twentieth century.

Note:

A woman by the name of Hazel Amelia Harmon was born in the State of Washington in 1900.

She was the daughter of William Yancy Harmon (1861-1910) and Sarah Elizabeth Coston Harmon (1874-1958).

She had two sisters and two brothers.

Hazel’s father died in 1910, within a few years of this photograph being made.

Hazel married Lloyd Edward McGinnis, and they had two children, a boy and a girl.

Sadly, the girl died in infancy.

In 1953, Hazel died at the age of 53.

Her death was in the State of California, but she is buried in the State of Washington -in the county in which she was born.

We don’t know if the McGinnis family had moved to California, or if Hazel died while visiting or residing temporarily in that place.
