Hugh Sends a Cooling Stream – Wilmington, Vermont (1907)

Wilmington is a small town (with a wonderful historic district) in the Deerfield Valley among the Green Mountains of south-central Vermont.

In the winter, this town often sets snowfall records for all of New England.

There is a private ski club in the area.

In July of 1907, Hugh Rice mailed a postcard from Wilmington to Miss Maud Crane in Homer, New York.

Homer is a town in Cortland County of central New York.

Homer is 238 miles west of Wilmington; we don’t know if this was Hugh’s home or if he knew Miss Crane through some other connection.

The postcard features a photograph of one of the streams flowing through the valley at Wilmington.

Published by O. H. Jones of Wilmington, the postcard was printed in Germany.

Some years ago, I had occasion to drive several times across New England and found the trip across the Green Mountains to be spectacular in all seasons.

Wilmington nestles between mountain ridges, halfway between the charming towns of Bennington and Brattleboro.

It was a favorite place, long before I found this postcard.

As the US is experiencing record heat across the country, perhaps the sight of the cool mountain stream will bring a moment of pleasure.

One hopes that Miss Crane was charmed by the postcard and was able to express her thanks in person to Hugh.
