“Keller’s Mountain” Lititz, PA (1906)

Miss Mollie Gable lived in Schaefferstown, an unincorporated community in Lebanon County of central Pennsylvania.

This area boasts several historic homes and businesses – it was one of the earliest settlements in Lebanon County (prior to 1725).

The postcard seems to have passed through several post offices – the reverse beats an unintelligible postmark and a postmark for Richland, PA.

Richland, a borough in Lebanon County, is a bit less than 5 miles from Schaefferstown.

In December of 1906, Mollie received a postcard from “M.W.”

The postcard was mailed from Lititz, a charming borough in Lancaster County, PA.

Lititz is 11 miles, due south of Schaefferstown on PA Route 501.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of a rural road as it reaches the crest of a hill.

The roadway is bordered by a rail fence and telephone poles.

The photograph legend reads, “Road Passing Keller’s Mountain, 1 1/2 mile East of Lititz“.

Although I have traveled this road (Rothsville Road) which climbs a steep hill, I was unaware that the topographical feature was named until posting this postcard photograph.

The postcard photograph was printed by the Express Printing Company of Lititz.

The Lititz Historical Foundation has published a history of this printing company.

On the margin of the face, MK writes, “Would certainly enjoy seeing you again”.

It is not clear if this invitation represents an actual meeting in person – many members of postcard clubs used similar expressions to indicate their desire to exchange more postcards.

One hopes that Mollie and her correspondent exchanged many more postcards.
