Leinbach’s Daylight Department Store

Some time ago, this establishment was noted on one of the Lancaster history sites.

The store closed in 1949, years before I was born, and I was not familiar with the story of Leinbach’s.

Recently, I found a postcard featuring a hand- colored photograph of the sky-lit interior courtyards of this bright store.

Mailed from Lancaster on July 16, 1913, the postcard was addressed to Hattie Gehman in Macungie, a suburb of Allentown.

On the reverse, M.A.B. explains her delay in mailing the postcard and shares the news that Mrs. Martin has died and will be buried on Sunday in Bowmansville.

Although this building still stands in Lancaster, it ceased to be a store and was remodeled for offices.

A drop ceiling now covers the remarkable skylight that flooded the interior with natural light.
