Miss Osborne Writes to Hila – Rose Hill, Iowa (1910)

Miss Osborne had six more weeks of teaching in the school year at Rose Hill, Iowa.

Rose Hill is a very small city (population 157) in southeast Iowa.  The town had a hundred more citizens in 1910 than it claimed in 2020.

In May (?), Miss Osborne sent a postcard to Miss Hila Wadsworth of Rose Hill.

Addressed as “My dear little girl”, Hila is invited to come down and see Miss Osborne the next time Hila visits her grandma.

The postcard, printed in Germany, is illustrated with an image of two white roses against a gray background.

Initially, I thought that Hila may have been a pupil of Miss Osborne’s, but that is not clear.

If she were a pupil, or former pupil, why would Hila not see Miss Osborne at the school?

I suspect that Hila is a contemporary of Miss Osborne’s, and that the “dear little girl” is a term of affection and not a reference to a difference in age.

In any event, we hope that Hila visits her grandmother, that Miss Osborne sees Hila again, and that the school year is completed satisfactorily.
