“Missing Maurice at Thanksgiving” – Gray, New York (1908)

Master Maurice Luther was growing up in Gray, now a census-designated place in the Mohawk Valley of Herkimer County in central New York State.

Gray had a post office from 1858-1920, but is now included within the postal region of Ohio, NY.

(Gray is about 41 miles north-northeast of Utica.)

In November of 1908, the boy received a Thanksgiving postcard from “Kiddily” – the name seems to be a childish nickname for an older relative, possibly Grandma.

The postcard was mailed from Utica, then a thriving city of commerce and industry in central New York.

Utica, on the Mohawk River, was an important city on the Erie Canal – later, a shipping center on the New York Central Railroad.

The face of the postcard is a colorful drawing of a boy in blue overalls carrying a turkey.

The tail of the turkey is arrayed around the boy’s head (and straw hat) like a feathered headdress.

At the boy’s feet are symbols of the Fall harvest – a pumpkin and some grapes.

Across the drawing, in white letters, is the proclamation, “Thanksgiving Greetings”.

There are several indistinct lines near the bottom of the face, but I could not discern an artist’s initial nor a publisher’s mark.

One can find a printed identification of the postcard as from the “Thanksgiving Series”.

On the reverse, the boy, Maurice, is addressed as “Sweetheart”.

The writer expresses a desire, “wish you could come to Grandma’s for Thanksgiving”.

“We are longing to see you”, the writer exclaims.

Before signing as “Kiddily”, the writer sends “best love and kisses”.

Maurice saved the postcard throughout his life.

One hopes that he grew up securely in Gray, surrounded by the love of all his relatives, and enjoying many visits with his Grandma.
