Norman and the “Wise Country Girl” – Topeka, Kansas (circa 1910)

Mr. Norman Swartz lived in Topeka, the capital city on the Kansas River in the State of Kansas.

Originally, Topeka was a ferry point for the Oregon Trail, and then a major station of the “Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad”.

Sometime around 1910, Norman received a romantic postcard from Maude.

The postcard was not mailed, suggesting that Maude may have lived nearby.

The face of the postcard shows a photograph of an amorous couple in a secluded spot.

The man has hung his hat on a post so as not to interfere with the passionate kiss.

A bit of super-imposed verse reads:

“Country girl is pretty wise

Knows that she has won a prize”

The romantic postcard was printed in Germany.

On the reverse, Maude asks Norman, “How do you like this”.

Maude adds, “I think it is rather pretty”.

It seems that Maude and Norman have regular correspondence as Maude reports that she has a similar postcard and will send it “next time”.

We cannot know the relationship history between Maude and Norman, but the postcard suggests that Maude may welcome some dalliance in the country.

One hopes that the two remained friends and correspondents for many years.
