“Old Chris” Was Good to Me – Oxford, PA (1912)

Alfred Jr. lived in Oxford, a borough in Chester County, PA.

In 1912, Oxford was a booming town known for its candy and confectionery business.  It was connected by railroads to Philadelphia and Baltimore.

(Oxford is the home of a private school that became Lincoln University – founded by a Presbyterian minister and his Quaker wife in 1854.)

We have seen other postcards related to the town of Oxford:

On December 31, 1912, Alfred Jr. sent a New Year greeting to Miss Lillian Morton.

Lillian lived at 448 West Orange Street in Lancaster, PA.

(This three-story townhouse of red brick, built in 1900, is now divided into three apartments.)

The face of the postcard is a brilliant drawing of flowers and birds surrounded by a border adorned with bells of various sizes.

The words, “A Happy New Year” are inscribed at the bottom of the postcard.

The colorful designs, printed in Germany, are lightly embossed.

On the reverse, young Alfred reports that he had a good Christmas, “Old Chris was good to me”.

He received “a nice train of cars that wind up and run around a track”.

Miss Lillian is greeted as “Dear Friend” and presented the postcard “with love”.

Otherwise, we do not know more about her relation to Alfred Jr.

We hope that Alfred Jr. continued to enjoy the toy train and that he and Miss Lillian were happy and prosperous in the coming year of 1913.
