Mrs. Abbie Phelan lived in Huntington, a sparsely-populated township of Lorain County in north-central Ohio.

In December of 1913, Mrs. Phelan received a New Year postcard from her nephew, Aaron.
Aaron mailed the postcard from Homer, a small, unincorporated community in central Ohio.
(Interestingly, two pioneers in women’s history – Tennessee Clafflin and Victoria Woodhull, grew up in Homer.)

The face of the postcard shows a large pot or tea kettle suspended above a fire, on an iron hook.
The apparatus to hold the kettle is festooned with sprigs of bright holly.
A banner with red letters proclaims, “A Happy New Year”.
On the reverse, Aaron writes a cheerful message, wishing his Aunt Abie a happy New Year.
Aaron reports that he spent Xmas “with Agie and Reuben” and that they are well.
“Agie had a swell dinner”.
There is some question about “what is Aunt Levery going to do?”
Aaron inquires about the folks and tells his aunt that he would like “to here (sic) from you.”
One hopes that Aaron and Aunt Abie (and all their kin) enjoyed a wonderful 1914.
