“Our Organ Is Not Finished” – Kearny, Nebraska (circa 1914)

Mrs. Mary Hopkins lived in Kearney, Nebraska.

Kearney is a city in south-central Nebraska; the city developed as the first transcontinental railroad crossed the plains after the Civil War.

Mrs. Hopkins had a daughter who lived elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the daughter did not mail the postcard – we cannot know where she lived.

The face of the postcard bears a beautiful illustration of a flowering tree.

The postcard was printed in the United States, suggesting a date near the beginning of World War I.

On the reverse, Mary’s daughter reports on the coming afternoon – she and “the girls” are “going to town”.

The daughter is going to the dentist.

In other news, Mrs. Hopkins learns that “we haven’t got the organ yet”.

This was the decade that saw an enormous expansion of musical instruments in the home.

Pump Organs became common in the parlors of many homes – and I assume that this is what is being built for Mrs. Hopkins’ daughter.

There may be some competition between families, as the daughter notes, “Tom Williams’ have a piano”.

One hopes that Mrs. Hopkins enjoyed this Spring scene, that the visit to town was successful, and that the daughter and “the girls” would soon enjoy an organ at home.
