Mrs. Andrew Wallace lived in Three Rivers, a small city in Saint Joseph County of southwest Michigan,
The city takes its name from two tributaries that flow into the St, Joe River at this place.

In April of 1914, Mrs. Wallace received a postcard from her father.
“Papa” mailed the postcard from Vicksburg, a village in Kalamazoo County of southwest Michigan.
Vicksburg was named for an early settler, John Vickers, who built a grist mill on Portage Creek in 1831.
Vicksburg is about 18 miles north of Three Rivers.

The face of the postcard is a cartoon drawing of a figure hiking along an empty road.
The traveler is wearing a large sun hat and patched overalls – and lugging a cumbersome carpet bag.’
Our hero pauses before a large yellow sign reading “Vicksburg”
A printed script above the sign asks:
Have you forgotten the way to (Vicksburg)”
Below the sign is the penciled name “Viola”.
I did not find an artist’s initial or a publisher’s mark.

On the reverse, Papa shares some troubling news about the health of family members.
Although “Artie (is) feeling fair again”, “Uncle Henry had a couple bad spells Sunday with his heart.”.
“Mabel (is) not feeling well.
Papa adds, “Father says to come up”.
If I assume that Papa is withing the postcard – then “Father must be Viola’s grandfather.
Papa adds, “Hello Sis” – which would mean Viola is living with an aunt.
Whether or not we have deduced the family relationships correctly, we hope that Artie continued to improve, that Uncle Henry had no recurrence of the “spells”, that Mabel had no further complaints, and that Viola was able to visit her family members in Vicksburg.
Genealogical Note
On October 5, 1886, Viola Emeline Foust was born in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.
Viola was the daughter of Charles H. Foust (1854-1920) and Lulu M. Smith (1860-1908).
Charles and Lulu were married in St Joseph County in 1880.
Viola had two older brothers, Arthur (1881-1916) and Herman (1883-1943).
(Viola’s brother, Arthur may be the “Artie” who had been suffering in 1914.)
In June of 1907, Viola married Andrew Wallace (1884-1965) in Vicksburg, Michigan.
The couple had no children.
Sometime between 1910 and 1920, Viola and Andrew moved from Kalamazoo County to Three Rivers, Michigan.
They remained in the same house in Three Rivers until Viola’s death in 1946, at age 59.
(I cannot conform the conjectural relationships from the postcard message. -although Viola did have an Aunt Emeline (“Sis”) who died in Three Rivers in 1937.
Emeline’s census residence is listed in Kalamazoo County, but she may have visited often in Three Rivers as she died in that place.
