Roger Markey on the Cradle Roll

Roger Markey’s Birthday 1913

Roger Eugene Markey was born in 1910 and added to the “Cradle Roll” of the United Evangelical Church in Jacobus.

In Protestant churches, especially those that did not baptize infants, the “Cradle Roll” was a way of identifying very young children as members of the Sunday School and the Church.

On his third birthday, in 1913, Roger received a postcard from the Sunday School to celebrate the day.

The card is signed on the face and the reverse by a representative of the Sunday School who appears to be Hattie Fulcomer.  The signature is hard to read.

It is charming to see that Roger, or someone close to him, cherished the birthday greeting so that it has survived for more than a century.
