Selina Sends an Embossed Parasol – Wilmington, Delaware (1909)

Selina lived in Girardville, a borough in Schuylkill County, about 58 miles northwest of Reading, PA.

In 1909, this region prospered from the mining of anthracite coal.

At Christmas, Selina mailed seasonal greetings from Girardville.

Mrs. Richard Webb was living in Wilmington, Delaware when she received a Christmas postcard from Selina.

(I have other postcards exchanged with the Webbs in communities of southern Pennsylvania.)

The postcard, featuring a deeply embossed image of an upturned parasol containing sprigs of holly, bears the embossed greeting, “Merry Christmas”.

In the lower right-hand corner of the face, one can find the embossed legend, “copyright 1908 by W. Siegel”.

It is a beautiful and sturdy card, and was well-preserved for more than a century.
