Sister Pearl Sends a Greeting to George – Smithville, Ohio, (circa 1918)

Mr. George C. Fike lived in Smithville, a village in Wayne County of central Ohio.

Sometime around 1918, George was celebrating a birthday.

(The red, two-cent stamp suggests the war years.)

George received a weighty postcard with a deeply-embossed design of purple flowers.

The brightly-colored blossoms are substantial – they may be paste-filled.

Beneath the flowers is a legend, “Birthday Greetings”.

The postmark is applied so lightly that it is impossible to discern the place from which the postcard was mailed.

On the reverse, we find the simple (without punctuation) inscription: “Your Sister Pearl”.

One would like to know more about the relationship between the siblings, but there is very little information on the postcard.

We can see that George preserved the greeting throughout his life, and one hopes that he and Pearl remained affectionate correspondents.
