“Stella Is Concerned About Will” – Urbana, Ohio (1908)

Mr. Will Parker lived on a rural delivery route outside Urbana, a city (41 miles west of Columbus) in west-central Ohio.

It seems that Will has not been well.

In December of 1908, Will received a postcard from Stella.

Stella wrote from Gallipolis, a chartered village on the Ohio River in southeast Ohio – about 140 miles southeast of Urbana.

Gallipolis was settled in part by French aristocrats fleeing the French Revolution.

The village of Gallipolis was significantly larger in 1910 than it is today.

The face of the postcard is a lightly-embossed drawing of roses in a basket.

There are no artist’s initials; the postcard was printed in Europe.

On the reverse, Stella reports that she received Will’s letter “tonight”.

Stella was “awfully sorry to hear that you were not getting any better”.

The postcard appears to have been sent immediately, which shows a fine level of concern on the part of Stella.

Will is asked to “write again as soon as you can” – so Stella will know “how you area”.

Stella’s calm composure suggests that Will’s condition is not grave.

I appreciate Stella’s clear hand-writing on the uneven surface of the postcard.

One hopes that Will soon began to feel better and that he sent the good news in a letter to Stella.

NOTE:

Genealogist, Carolyn Sands, shared a link containing information from the US census in 1920.

William Parker, born about 1881. lived on Firman Avenue in Urbana, Ohio.

William was married to his wife, Stella. It appears that the postcard relationship was a serious one-that ended in marriage.

William worked as a machinist and they owned their house (although there was a mortgage).
