“Suffering from Colds at the New Year” – Gibsonburg, Ohio (1917)

Mrs. Sidney Angleberger lived in Lewistown, a census-designated place about 10 miles north of Frederick, Maryland.

(We met Mrs. S. A. Angleberger in an earlier postcard story – she received a birthday postcard from her daughter, Thelma.)

In December of 1917, Mrs. Angleberger received a New Year postcard from Mollie.

Mollie mailed the greeting from Gibsonburg, Ohio.

Gibsonburg is a village in Sandusky County of north-central Ohio.

The village was laid out in 1871 when the railroad reached this area.

The face of the postcard is a very spare drawing of Baby New Year appearing outside a door.

A verse accompanies the drawing:

“Greetings

A little New Year is about to appear,

I hope he will bring you all joy and good cheer.”

On the reverse, Mollie addresses Mrs. Angleberger as “Friend” and thanks her for her card.

Mollie expresses gladness that “all are well”, and quickly adds, “we are not so well”.

Mollie, or some others, seem to have colds.

Mollie reports that the household “had a nice Xmas” and she promises to “tell you more later”.

Christmas may have been pleasurable for Mollie as she “received ten presents”.

In closing, Mollie asks Mrs. Angleberger to “write me a letter and tell me all the news”.

Mollie also identifies herself as “Friend”.

One hopes that all in Mollie’s household recovered from their maladies, that Mollie sent a fuller account of Christmas, that Mrs. Angleberger sent “all the news”, and that the friends maintained a correspondence for many years.
