Taking the Train to Little Rock – Little Rock, Arkansas (1933)

Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were traveling, and they sent a postcard photograph to their friends in New Jersey.

The friends, Mr. and Mrs. Yanard, lived in Cranford –  a township on the banks of the Rahway River in the Raritan Valley of central New Jersey.

(Cranford is 18 miles southwest of Manhattan.)

It is very possible that the addressees are Mr. and Mrs. Maynard – their name misspelled as the Andersons struggled to complete a pile of postcards they intended to mail to their many friends.

One can find several families with the surname, “Maynard” in the Raritan Valley of New Jersey.

The postcard was mailed from Little Rock, the capital city on the banks of the Arkansas River in central Arkansas.

On the face is a photograph of the “new” depot of the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

(Although mailed in 1933, the postcard was printed circa 1922.)

Railroad Stations were not only highly-utilized public buildings, they also advertised the prosperity and stability of the railroad company and of the city.

This depot was erected in the Renaissance Revival style during the early 1920’s.

The previous station was destroyed by fire.

The Depot is still in use and is served by Amtrak.

It is not clear if the Andersons are traveling by rail and if they passed through this depot.

On the reverse, the Andersons wrote, “Had a very nice trip so far”.

In May of 1933, when the postcard was mailed, many people in the US were facing significant financial strain.

The postmark shows the Postal Service promotion of “Air Mail”.

(The Postal Service was an important booster and financial supporter of the early aviation industry in the US.)

One hopes that the Andersons continued to enjoy their trip and that they returned safely to their home.
