“The Big Squeeze” – Comic Postcard circa 1935

The wide range of comic postcards has never held much interest for me; but the genre has always been a considerable part of the postcard industry.

The “back story” to this postcard is interesting.

The Nyce family was among a group of German settlers, of the Mennonite fellowship, who settled near Germantown, PA in the early 18th century.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the NYCE Manufacturing Company, in the Montgomery County community of Vernfield, was a major producer of postcards in Pennsylvania.

It is not hard to find NYCE postcards – the company distributed thousands of generic rural scenes on which a printer could apply local place names.

The company’s products included seasonal postcards and postcards celebrating national holidays, like Washington’s Birthday.

Comic cards were another line of trade.

This postcard is a sample – advertising the wholesale cost of bulk purchases of 100.

If you were a druggist, shop-keeper, or owner of another commercial enterprise, you were likely to have received one of these solicitations.

The comic postcards may well have “sold like hot cakes” as there are numerous examples that have survived for contemporary collectors.
