“The Boys Are Having a Good Time” – Grand Rapids, Michigan (1917)

Mrs. John Larson lived in Manton, a city in west-central Michigan.

Once a railroad town, the city is now the center of a large Amish community.

In November of 1917, Mrs. Larson received a postcard from W. L.  – who, I suspect, is a family member.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of the Furniture Temple in Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids was a center of furniture-making, and this building was erected in 1915 to provide offices and showrooms for furniture manufacturers.

On the reverse, we find an interesting tale of an acclaimed team or unit traveling by train across Michigan.

The postcard was mailed from Kalamazoo, but refers to progress through other cities in the state.

Kalamazoo is in southwest Michigan; the party traveled about 130 miles from Reed City to Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo.

I cannot determine if this is a championship sports team, a military unit, or some other celebrated group.

The writer notes, “Lots of people at all stations.”

“Band played at Reed City and Grand Rapids”.

The good feeling seems to be contagious; W. L. reports, “the boys are singing and laughing and having a good time”.

As the US was still engaged in World War I and patriotic fever was very high, this might be a group of enlistees headed to the war.

One hopes that all the lauded characters returned safely to their homes.
