The Flower Seller

The Flower Seller – Art Postcard, circa 1910

This postcard, never mailed, features an illustration of an English flower vendor.

Produced in Berlin, the postcard was intended for sale in Great Britain.

Selling flowers was a common occupation of poor girls – a difficult way to sustain one’s life.

The humorous depiction of Eliza Doolittle in “My Fair Lady” bears little resemblance to the actual life of a flower vendor “on the streets”.

This illustration is well-done, although the woman, accompanied by a child, looks far more prosperous than is likely to be true.

I cannot find an artist’s mark, and conclude that the artist is one of the many anonymous illustrators who made a living by creating postcard art.
