The Order of Owls – Ephrata, PA (1930)

The past fifty years has seen a huge decline in the number of citizens participating in fraternal organizations and mutual aid societies.

The Moose, the Elks, the Robins, the Orioles, the Odd Fellows, the Eagles, the Owls, were among dozens of organizations that strengthened community life.

I was not familiar with The Owls until I found this postcard related to the “Nest” in Ephrata.

The card discusses changes to the by-laws related to assessments for death benefits or burial expenses – a key benefit of many mutual aid societies.

The card was mailed, from Ephrata, to W. H. Bitler in East Earl on March 3, 1930.
