Mr. Douglas Wants His Gun! – Visalia, California (1875)

Mr. E.C. Douglas lived in Visalia, a city in the rich agricultural area of the San Joachim Valley.

In 1874, Mr. Douglas ordered a gun from the firm of E. Remington & Sons in New York.

The gun had not arrived by the end of December, but Mr. Douglas received communication at that time that the gun was being shipped “immediately”.

On January 21, 1875, Mr. Douglas send this postcard to the Remington Company.

“What is the matter!” Mr. Douglas asks.

The postcard, mailed from Visalia, is one of the early “postal cards” issued by the US Pistal Service.

The crowned figure in the stamp is “Liberty”.

Unfortunately, we do not know if the protest of Mr. Douglas was successful.

One hopes that the Remington Company, which noted receipt of this postcard, fulfilled their promise to ship the ordered gun.
