The Pennsylvania Railroad Low-Grade Bridge at Martic Forge- circa 1910

The low-grade line across southern Lancaster County is one of the marvels of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

I found this image with a lot of old paper at an antique mall.

This hand-tinted postcard photograph was made sometime around 1910 – the postmark is indistinct.

The postcard was mailed from Pequea Creek to Mr. Herbert Gainer of 246 East Clay Street in Lancaster.

(This postmark, I have been informed, is quite rare. Unfortunately, the postmark on this postcard was applied carelessly and the image is very blurred.)

After the bankruptcy of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the abandonment of the low-grade line by ConRail, the trestle bridge became part of a pedestrian hiking trail.

The bridge was destroyed by fire in 2018. Money has been appropriated to restore the bridge on the hiking trail.
