The Soldier – Cuero, Texas (circa 1908)

Sometime around 1908, Master Roy Brown received a postcard from his friend, Frieda.

We know that Roy was a boy; that the address includes the words “at school” suggests he was a classmate of Frieda.

Roy and Frieda lived in Cuero, a city in southeast Texas.

Once a stop on the Chisholm Trail, the town was organized as a city after the cattle drives had ended.

On the face, the postcard bears a painting of a soldier at rest – his weapon is at his side and he is smoking.

The image was copyrighted in 1908, and it is likely that the postcard was exchanged soon thereafter.

We may assume that Roy treasured the gift from Frieda as it was preserved in good condition for more than a century.
