The Solitary Traveler – Camden, Delaware (1910)

Mr. Lyndon Colby lived in Caanan, an historic town in west-central New Hampshire.

In July of 1910, Lyndon received a postcard from Mabel Rosh.

Mabel lived in Camden, an historic town in central Delaware.

Camden, originally a Quaker settlement, shipped lumber and agricultural supplies to Philadelphia and New York by boats from river ports.

When the railroad connected the interior of Delaware, the town increased in size and wealth.

The postcard bears an original drawing, in a frame shaped like an artist’s palate.

A female traveler walks alone on a rutted, unpaved road in a rural setting.

(This would be typical of most roads in 1910.)

Two men stand in the distance, but the traveler proceeds alone.

The artist is anonymous; I cannot determine a publisher.

Our traveler, sporting a red cape and long, blue skirt, appears confident and able as she proceeds on her errand.

One hopes that Lyndon was pleased by the postcard greeting and that he and Mabel enjoyed a long friendship and correspondence.
