“Tommy Reaches New York City” – Rock Hall, Maryland (1922)

Miss Ethel Hill lived in Rock Hall, a waterfront community on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

We have seen a postcard between Mrs. Matilda Hill and her daughter, Emma Hill, from Rock Hall circa 1913.

In October of 1922, Ethel received a postcard from Tommy.

Tommy mailed the postcard from a railroad station on his trip through New York City.

The face of the postcard shows the Metropolitan Insurance Company building at night.

This early skyscraper faces Madison Square Park, the lovely green space where Broadway crosses Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

Erected between 1905 and 1909, this tower (designed by Napoleon LeBrun & Sons) occupies a full city block between 23rd and 24th streets and Madison Avenue and Park Avenue South.

This postcard scene was published by the Union News Company.

(I am very accustomed to seeing this landmark, having lived only a few blocks away for more than 25 years.)

On the reverse, Tommy reports that “we got up here alright”.

It appears that Tommy has traveled beyond New York City.

Tommy reports his new address in Marlborough, New York – a Hudson River town in Ulster County about 77 miles north of New York City.

The place seems to suit Tommy as he writes. “I think I will like it.”

Ethel is encouraged to send mail in care of “Tucker & Strong” – and this remains a mystery.

Despite the friendly help of the Town Historian in Marlborough and of an Historian at the local Library, we have not yet been able to identify “Tucker and Strong”.

One hopes that Ethel was pleased to receive the postcard, that Tommy continued to enjoy his new surroundings, and that the two remained correspondents for many years.
