Uncle Leslie Sends a Black Cat – Penbrook, PA (1908)

Master Vernne Brant lived in Penbrook, a borough near the Susquehanna River in Dauphin County of central Pennsylvania.

Penbrook is adjacent to the capital city of Harrisburg.

In January of 1908, the boy received a postcard from Uncle Leslie.

The postcard was mailed from a railroad station, and the location is unclear.

The postcard was postmarked in Harrisburg, so the postcard was likely to have originated on a rail line to that city.

The face of the postcard is a nice drawing of a black cat with white markings.

The cat wears a pink ribbon around the neck.

I do not see an artist’s mark, even when enlarging the image enormously to make digital repairs to abraded spots on the face.

Beneath the drawing, Uncle Leslie has inscribed his name.

On the reverse, we read that Uncle Leslie prepared the postcard in Gettysburg, PA.

It is unclear if the postcard marked a birthday or special event in the life of young Vernne.

The postcard was preserved throughout his life.

One hopes that he and his Uncle Leslie enjoyed a good relationship and frequent correspondence for many years.
