Visiting the Beach in February – Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin (1902)

Whitefish Bay was a German-American enclave near Milwaukee, in southeast Wisconsin.

In 1898, the brewing magnate, Frederick Pabst, developed a resort on the shore of Lake Michigan.

To the hotel, bandstand, restaurant, and beer garden, Pabst added a Ferris Wheel and a carousel.

The Whitefish Bay Resort became enormously popular; local visitors could travel by streetcar, others arrived by train or steamboat.

In February of 1902, Jed crossed Lake Michigan (from Grand Rapids) to visit the area.

Jed sent a souvenir postcard to Miss Friedrich in Grand Rapids.

The face is an hand-colored photograph of the resort, published by E.C. Kropp of Milwaukee.

Beneath the photograph, Jed writes, “It is just as cold here as G.R.”

It may be that Jed had some business that brought him to Whitefish Bay or to Milwaukee; one hates to think that he had hoped to enjoy the beach in February.

Miss Friedrich seems to have treasured the postcard as it was preserved for 120 years.
