We Cannot Drive from Hagerstown

Snow Prevents Dinner in East Petersburg – 1935

Mr. Daniel Good, Jr. of East Petersburg had invited friends from Maryland to dinner in January of 1935.

Unfortunately, Mr. Good received a postcard on January 26 announcing that his friends, the Leshers (?), “….are not coming in all this snow”.

I have not checked weather reports from January of 1935 to find how bad the region was affected by snow.

The postcard features a picture of swans in the City Park of Hagerstown, Maryland.

The swans, swimmingly lazily in the summer sunshine, seem inappropriate for the postcard message about a blizzard.

The postcard was mailed from Hagerstown, and bears a receiving postmark of East Petersburg, PA.

The decorative stamp commemorates the “Chicago Century of Progress” in 1933.
