“Wheat in the Barn, Oats Ready to Come In” – Etna Green, Indiana (1910)

Mrs. Amanda Eaglebarger lived in Etna Green, a town in north-central Indiana.

In August of 1910, Amanda received a postcard from her cousin, Lizzie.

Lizzie mailed the postcard from Anna, a village in west-central Ohio.

Anna, atop a prehistoric riverbed, suffered a devastating earthquake in 1937.

(Anna is more than 140 miles southeast of Etna Green.)

The face of the postcard displays a drawing of a rural home along a river.

The print is made with a very limited palette which gives the scene a somber, autumnal appearance.

A title is lettered at the bottom, “Dear Old Home”.

There is an artist’s signature, but I have not deciphered it.

On the reverse, Lizzie thanks Amanda for her card and raises questions about postcards that Lizzie has sent to Joe, Laura, and “some of the rest”.

Lizzie seems to be residing with (or closely connected to) an extended family.

She reports that “Pa is not well. but works a little”.

“The rest are well as usual, including Aunt and Uncle”.

Although the month of August has not passed, the harvest is proceeding.

The “Men are away threshing today”, but Lizzie’s household has “wheat in the barn, oats ready to come in”.

One hopes that Amanda was glad to receive the news, that all of Lizzie’s postcards had been received, that Pa recovered his health, that an abundant harvest was collected, and that the cousins remained correspondents for many years.
