“Spring Sports” – Embreeville, PA (circa 1915)

Miss Ella Osborn lived in Embreeville, a small, unincorporated community on a bend of the Brandywine Creek in Chester County of southeast Pennsylvania.

Almost every structure in this community is listed as an Historic Building.

Embreeville was once the site of the Chester County Poor House, later the Chester County Asylum, and (from 1938-1980) a large Pennsylvania State Hospital.

The abandoned State Hospital buildings are falling into disrepair, but development plans for the site are delayed by a lack of supporting infrastructure and land-use controversy.

Sometime in the early days of a year near 1915, Miss Osborn was given a postcard.

Because it was not mailed, we may assume that the sender lived nearby.

The face of the postcard is a lovely bit of original postcard art -although the artist is not identified.

A sleek touring car, bearing two women with veiled headgear, crosses a stream on a narrow bridge.

Below, at the edge of the brook, two young men (in knickers and cloth caps) are fishing.

The pleasant scene is rendered in a hazy, almost impressionistic style.

In the lower right, the picture is entitled, “Spring Sports”.

Fishing and taking leisurely drives seem to be the recommended activities of the Spring.

On the reverse, the sender is identified only as “You know who”.

The writer asks, “How did you get over N(ew) Y(ear)s”.

There does not seem to be any special occasion for the postcard greeting.

The sender states, “I thought I would send you a card and let you know I am alive.”

Ella preserved the postcard in very good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that the Spring brought many opportunities to pursue sporting pleasure for Ella and her correspondent.
