Will Bruce Come to the Fair? Dillsburg, PA (1910)

Mrs. Bruce Wagner lived in Dillsburg, PA – a borough in northwest York County, very close to the borders of Adams County and Cumberland County.

(The postcard is addressed to Adams County, but there is only one borough of Dillsburg, and it is in York County.)

In September of 1910, Mrs. Wagner (Alice) received a postcard from Hattie in the city of York.

Alice learns that Roy and Hattie have recently moved; they are busy with housekeeping.

Hattie writes, “I hope that Bruce will make up his mind to come to the Fair.”

The York Fair, a very old and very large Fall celebration, was a major event in York County.

(Dillsburg also celebrates a Farm Fair in October, but the postcard is written from York and suggests that the Wagners were expected there.)

The face of the postcard is illustrated with an elaborate script, “To My Darling”, and adorned with horseshoes, clovers, and forget-me-nots.

One hopes that Bruce agrees to come to York, that Hattie sees her friend, Alice, and that Alice and Bruce and Hattie and Roy have a marvelous time at the Fair.
