“You’re An Eyefull!” – Mifflintown, PA (circa 1920)

Elsie Probst was living on a rural route outside Mifflintown, a borough (and county seat) on the Juniata River in Juniata County of central Pennsylvania.

In 1920, Mifflintown had more residents (1083) than it did in 2020 (840)

The Pennsylvania Railroad served this agricultural community until the mid-20th century.

It appears that Elsie was boarding or working away from home – the postcard was sent in care of J. H. Isenhart.

A handwritten note in pencil, possibly by the Postmaster or the Isenharts, suggests “Try Espenshade farm”.

In February of a year near 1920, Elsie received a Valentine postcard from Uncle Jim.

The postcard was mailed from Mifflintown, so we may assume that Uncle Jim saw Elsie regularly.

On the face of the postcard, a boy with binoculars stands behind a large red heart.

On the heart, we read, “Oh! Baby!  You’re an eyefull!”

The boy is looking at a girl in a short blue dress who is wearing a cloche bonnet.

(The cloche hat, although invented in 1908, became enormously popular in the 1920’s.)

On her feet, the girl wears blue shoes that match her frilly skirt.

The boy, in a white shirt and bow tie, seems interested in the girl who holds her head in a coquettish manner.

Beneath the drawing, a printed caption declares, “Be My Valentine

The postcard was made and published in the United States.

On the reverse, Uncle Jim inscribed only his name.

Elsie preserved the Valentine postcard throughout her life.

One hopes that she acquired many more valentines in the years to come.
