Jessie Keeps Warm in New Brunswick – Belleville, New Jersey (1937)

In August of 1937, Jessie was visiting New Brunswick, the maritime province on Canada’s Atlantic coast.

Lying east of the US State of Maine, New Brunswick lies within the Appalachian Mountain region.

One of Canada’s most economically-underdeveloped regions (with a high proportion of rural residents), New Brunswick does export lobsters and other seafood, along with agricultural products.

Jessie sent a postcard to Dr. and Mrs. G. R. Lewis who lived in Belleville, New Jersey.

Belleville is a township in Essex County in northeast New Jersey; it lies along the Second River, south of Newark.

(Belleville had the first “Chinatown” in the United States, welcoming a group of Chinese laborers who had worked on the western railroads but faced continued public antipathy.)

The postcard was mailed from Youngs Cove, a small community in the former Electoral District of Queens in south-central New Brunswick.

In the 20th century, New Brunswick made several administrative reassignments in an effort to improve community services and representation.

This is a sparsely-settled area with several rivers, now within Waterborough Parish.

The face of the postcard shows a drawing of Jemseg, once (for a short time) the capital of the French territory of Acadia and now a rural community in the Queens district.

Most of the early French colonists in this region were forcibly relocated to Louisiana and other places during the many clashes between British and French imperialists from the 17th to the 19th century.

The short Jemseg River Valley is remarkably beautiful.

Printed by Tichnor Brothers Inc. of Boston, the charming scene was made by an anonymous postcard artist.

On the reverse, Jessie reports “Just a lovely drive along the river”.

Dr, Lewis is encouraged to “bring your boat up here…”.

It seems the nights have been cool, as Jessie exclaims, “We are using three pairs of wool blankets to keep warm.”

One hopes that Jessie and the party continued to enjoy New Brunswick.

It seems that Dr. and Mrs. Lewis were pleased by the souvenir of Jemseg as the postcard was preserved in very good condition.
