“Nellie Buys Dress Goods for Ethel” – Oneida, NY (1912)

Mrs. DeForest Johnston lived in Oneida, the city that developed along the route of the Erie Canal in central New York State.

In March of 1912, Mrs. Deforest received a postcard from Nellie.

Nellie mailed the postcard from the Hudson Terminal in lower Manhattan.

(We discussed in an earlier postcard story the great transportation depot and office complex that once stood where the World Trade Center was later erected.)

The face of the postcard is dominated by the drawing of a large, gold-colored ruler.

The eighth-inch marks and the numerals are neatly and accurately depicted.

A printed verse above and below the ruler lauds the “Golden Rule”:

“There are Rules and Creeds to guide Us

And help us in Life’s School;

But the Finest Creed for every need,

Is the Good Old Golden Rule.”

What is termed the “Golden Rule” is the commandment of Jesus found in Matthew 7:12 and in other accounts in the Gospels:

“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

On the reverse, Mrs. Deforest is addressed as “Mae”.

Nellie writes that she “went to New York”.

There, Nellie “bought a waist and some pumps”.

She also selected “some dress goods for Ethel, a blue washable material.”

In other news. Nellie reports that “the Music Club gave a spread for the High School” on Friday night.

The event seems to have been a success; Nellie reports, “we had a good time”.

In closing, Nellie sends “Love to all”.

One hopes that the new shirtwaist and pumps proved satisfactory that Ethel loved the blue dress she was able to make, and that Mae and Nellie remained friendly correspondents for many years.
