“The Girls Have Enjoyed the Beach” – Mansfield, Ohio (1938)

Mrs. Francis Gage lived in Mansfield, a prosperous center of industry on the Mohican River in Rockland County of central Ohio.

Mansfield was built on the western edge of the Allegheny Plateau, a hilly region surrounded by fertile farmland.

(I spent time in Mansfield a dozen years ago and was struck by the number of large Victorian homes that have now been cut up into apartments as the region’s industries declined.)

In July of 1938, Mrs. Gage received a postcard from Mrs. Greene.

The postcard was mailed from Mitiwanga, an unincorporated community on the shore of Lake Erie in north-central Ohio.

We recently saw a view of Mitiwanga Beach in a postcard story sent to a great-grandmother: “Grandma Hears About Her Great-Granddaughter”.

Mansfield is about 47 miles south of Mitiwanga.

The face of the postcard is a lovely scene – a sailboat on the water at sunset.

A printed title proclaims, “Greetings from Mitiwanga, Ohio on Lake Erie”.

We can see a yacht with about ten people on board.

The setting sun casts colorful bands across the sky, which are reflected in the water.

Beneath the image, a verse extols the experience:

“A sound to put a man at ease,

The snap of a sail in the evening breeze.

The caress of the waves on a gliding bow,

And heaven is closer to earth just now.”

The linen-style postcard was published in the patented “Art Colortone” process by the Curt Teich Company of Chicago.

On the reverse, Mrs. Greene omits a greeting.

She begins, “We have had a wonderful time here – had a good rest”.

By this time, however, Mrs. Greene reports that they “Are ready to come home”.

Mrs. Greene seems to be vacationing with others.

She writes, “The girls seem to be enjoying themselves – on the beach a good share of the time.”

In closing, Mrs. Greene sends “My love to the family”.

One hopes that the girls enjoyed their last moments on the beach, that Mrs. Gage was delighted by the pretty souvenir, and that all returned safely to their homes.
