“An Arbor of Grapes for Thanksgiving” – Sioux City, Iowa (1928)

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Peck lived in Quimby, a very small city near the Little Sioux River in northwest Iowa.

In 1930, the population of Quimby was 318, but the numbers fell to 249 by 2020,

In November of 1928 (possibly 1926), the Pecks received a Thanksgiving postcard from “Effie and family”.

The postcard was mailed from Sioux City, the city on the Missouri River that is a now a center of business and commerce for west-central Iowa.

The first Europeans in this area of tallgrass prairie were French and Spanish fur traders.

Lewis and Clark were the first US citizens to pass through the area in 1804.

The face of the postcard is a drawing of the graceful arc of a grape vine.

Clusters of purple berries are shown against a background of pastel tones.

A quatrain expresses the seasonal greeting:

“I hope you’ll be happy

Thanksgiving Day

I shall think of you all

Though far away”

This example of postcard art was published by The Whitney Company of Worcester, Massachusetts.

The “Whitney Made” logo can be distinguished beneath the postmark.

The Whitney Company was once the world’s largest publisher of Valentines, and became a major proucer of postcards in the early 20th century.

On the reverse, Effie has written a terse message:

“This leaves us all fine”.

One hopes that Effie and her family continued in fine health, and that they and the Pecks enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Thanksgiving.
