“Linwood Sends a Turkey” – McKeansburg, PA (1908)

Mr. Raymond Shoener lived in McKeansburg, a census-designated place in Schuylkill County of east-central Pennsylvania.

This small community grew up around a crossroads of two highways near the Little Schuylkill River.

Some time ago, we saw a birthday postcard sent to Homer Shoener in the same small community circa 1910, and we discussed a Rally Day postcard mailed by a Mrs. Harry Schoener, Church Secretary in nearby Orwigsburg, PA.in 1922.

In November of 1908, Raymond received a Thanksgiving postcard from Linwood.

The postcard was not mailed so we might assume that Linwood was a nearby friend, schoolmate, or relative.

The face of the postcard is a drawing of three children at the porch of a house.

The boy, who is older, displays a large, richly- plumed turkey to his sisters.

The older girl appears ready to pluck a feather from the turkey, while the younger girl reaches out her hands in eagerness or delight.

Each girl is wearing a dress trimmed with lace; the boy is wearing knickers with long stockings.

With his sporty hat, kerchief at his neck, and a pack on his back, the attire of the boy looks Germanic – the postcard was printed in Saxony.

There appears to be an artist’s signature or printer’s mark on the lower right of the face, but I could not distinguish it.

There is no written message on the reverse, but the signature of Linwood includes the date.

RESEARCH NOTE

Members of the same family, in three generations, are identified by two spellings of their surname – “Shoener” or “Schoener”. Different spellings are used for this surname of parents and children within the same document.

Sometime in 1901, Raymond Frederick Schoener was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

He was the son of Fred Schoener (1877-1976) and Katie R. Wagner (1877-1946).

Fred and Katie had been married in Schuylkill County in February of 1900.

Raymond was the oldest of four children; he had two sisters and one brother, Homer.

All the children lived to adulthood.

In 1918, Raymond registered for the draft in Schuylkill County, but he was not called.

Sometime around 1921, Raymond married Mabel Koch (1901-1977).

The couple had three boys, but the eldest son died at four years of age.

Raymond died in July of 1947 at the age of 46.

Mabel lived as a widow for 30 years before her death in November of 1977 at age 76.

Raymond and Mabel are buried in Kimmels Evangelical Free Church Cemetery in Orwigsburg, PA.
