“Remembering George Washington” – Havre de Grace, Maryland (circa 1910)

Miss Tillie L. Eby lived in Elizabethtown, a borough in northwest Lancaster County, PA – in southeast Pennsylvania.

Elizabethtown is about 18 miles southeast of Harrisburg, the State Capital.

Through the early 20th century, Elizabethtown was evolving from its agricultural roots by the development of shoe manufacturing plants, the birth of a chocolate company, and the growth of a liberal arts college.

In February of a year near 1920, Tillie received a postcard from H. L. O.

The postcard was mailed from Havre de Grace, the city in Harford County of north-central Maryland – near the mouth of the Susquehanna River at the head of the Chesapeake Bay.

Named for the French city, Le Havre, the Maryland city was an important center of shipping and had erected a magnificent lighthouse that has been preserved.

The face of the postcard is a drawn portrait of President Washington standing before a furled flag.

Behind the great man, an impressive structure can be seen among green trees.

I assume that this is a representation of Washington’s beloved plantation, Mount Vernon.

Beneath the framed medallion portrait is a title block showing: WASHINGTON” and the dates “February 22nd 1732- December 4th 1799”.

In the early 20th century, Washington’s Birthday was widely celebrated, both publicly and privately.

Many citizens observed the day by exchanging patriotic postcards.

We have seen other examples of postcards celebrating the First President:

I have not identified the publisher, but the postcard was “Printed in Germany”.
