“A View of Licking Creek for Edna” – Cocolamus, PA (1907)

Miss Edna Brown lived in Cocolamus, a small village along the Cocolamus Creek in Fayette Township of Juniata County in central Pennsylvania.

In July of 1907. Edna received a postcard from J. B. R.

The postcard was mailed from Mifflintown, a borough and county seat of Juniata County.

Mifflintown is almost 13 miles southwest of Cocolamus.

These communities lie along beautiful ridges of the Appalachian Mountains.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of “Licking Creek, West of Mifflintown, PA.”

The Licking Creek arises along the Tuscarora mountains of Juniata County and flows south into Maryland where it empties into the Potomac River.

Although the bucolic scene is charming, this is an uncolored photograph of limited clarity.

The placid waters of the creek lie below a rocky hill covered with scrub brush.

There is a blurred image of a man, wearing a cap and a white shirt, bending to the water.

He appears to be wearing boots, and may be engaged in fishing,

The postcard was printed and published by E. C. Kropp of Milwaukee.

On the reverse, the “undivided back” leaves no place for a message.

The sender, J.B.R., has inscribed only initials on the face.

There is very little information with which to make a conjecture about the relationship between the correspondents.

Edna preserved the postcard in good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that many more postcards were exchanged in the years to come.

RESEARCH NOTE

I believe that this is the correct identification of “Edna Brown” – her marriage license, obituary, and gravestone use the name “M. Edna Brown”.

There are no alternate records for a “Miss Edna Brown” in Juniata County for the designated time.

On August 8, 1888, Minnie Edna Brown was born in Fayette Township of Juniata County, PA.

She was the daughter of William S. Brown (1849-1912) and Emma Sieber (1852-1926).

William and Emma had six daughters and one son; daughter Emma was the middle child.

Unfortunately, the only son, brother to Emma, died in 1907 at age 15.

All the daughters lived well into adulthood.

In September of 1909, Emma married Clyde Dunn Brenner (1886-1961).

The couple had three sons who lived to adulthood.

After Clyde’s death in 1961, Emma lived as a widow in McAllisterville (Fayette Township).

Emma died in June of 1974 at age 85 – she outlived her eldest son who died of a bleeding ulcer in 1961.

The obituary notes that Emma was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and that she was survived by two sons, one of her sisters, seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Emma and Clyde are buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Fayette Township; the graves of two sons and other family members lie nearby.
