“The Holston River” – Abingdon, Virginia (circa 1935)

This postcard was never mailed; there are no individual stories attached to it.

Abingdon is a charming town, and county seat of Washington County, in the extreme southwest region of Virginia.

The town is known for the “Barter Theatre” which opened during the Great Depression and encouraged local residents to barter fruits and vegetables, or homemade goods, for theater tickets.

Today, Abingdon is home to a vibrant arts scene with small galleries and shops lining Main Street.

The Holston River arises near Kingsport, Tennessee (about 37 miles southwest of Abingdon) and joins the French Broad River at Knoxville to form the Tennessee River.

Three branches (or, forks) of the Holston River drain much of northeast Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and northwest North Carolina.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of the “Holston River near Abingdon, Virginia.”

Printed on linen-style stock, the photograph shows a placid river scene devoid of human presence.

At this spot, one river bank is a cliff face covered with brush and trees.

On the other bank, rolling hills of green meadows stretch down to the water’s edge.

A subtitle indicates that the “Photo thru (sic) courtesy of the Norfolk & Western Railway”.

The linen-style postcard was printed by the Asheville Post Card Company of North Carolina.

Like many other postcard images that we have seen, this photograph was probably made a decade or two earlier than 1935 – and hand-colored for the re-printing.

Some years ago, when I was traveling for business, I often passed through this area of southwest Virginia – where the eastern point of the State of Tennessee, and the northern border of the State of North Carolina converge.

One of the roads I traveled wound along the banks of the Holston River and opened to scenic vistas very much like the postcard image.
