Miss Margarit Gilles lived in Baltimore, the prosperous port on the Chesapeake Bay in central Maryland.

(I believe that this is “Margaret Gillis”, but I am using the spelling of the writer.)
In June of 1910, Margarit received a postcard from R. K.
The sender mailed the postcard from Baltimore, so we may assume the correspondent lived within the same city.
The face of the postcard is a photograph of the “Barye Lion”, a monumental statue placed in Mount Vernon Place.
Mount Vernon is a lovely neighborhood of tree-lined streets with charming townhouses.
The area, just north of downtown Baltimore, was planned around the city’s monument to George Washington.
The Walters Art Museum, the Peabody Conservatory, and other cultural landmarks are located in this area that is now a National Historic District.

The Barye Lion is a replica of a monumental seated lion that was executed in bronze by Antoine-Louis Barye for the Tuileries Gardens in Paris.
This copy was cast by the American sculptors, Henry A. Naylor and Caroline Naylor in 1885,
The work was commissioned and given to the city by the philanthropist, William Walters.

Published by the firm, J. and M. Ottenheimer of Baltimore, the postcard was printed in Germany.
On the reverse, R. K. expresses a great desire for Margarit’s visit – “Every day I am looking for you to come.”
The focus of the visit will be “to see Luna Park.”
Luna Park was a small amusement park in Baltimore that is now defunct.
The original “Luna Park” was in Coney Island, NY – but the name became synonymous for “amusement park” – although there was a Luna Park corporation.

One hopes that Margarit was persuaded to make the trip to Luna Park, that the correspondents enjoyed their excursion, and that they maintained a postcard correspondence for many years.
Genealogical Note
There are many variations of this name in census records, but none match the details of the postcard address.
There is a Social Security Death record for a Margaret Gillis (1892-1966) who was born and who died in Maryland – but this citation is not linked to any other records.
