A Turkey from Her Teacher – Safe Harbor, PA (1910)

Miss Daisy Pickel lived in Safe Harbor, an unincorporated community at the confluence of the Conestoga River and the Susquehanna River in southeast Pennsylvania.

In the Fall of 1910, Daisy received a Thanksgiving greeting; the colorful postcard appears to have been presented by hand.

The face of the postcard shows a lattice-work of oak leaves which supports a large, embossed turkey.

Beneath the twined branches is a rural scene, framed by shocks of wheat.

Above the scene are the words, “Thanksgiving Greetings”.

The postcard was copyright by the publisher, A. S. Meeker, in 1910.

It is from the firm’s “Thanksgiving” Series.

On the reverse, the sender inscribed a brief message:

“From your teacher

 Ida S. Henry”

It is not clear if this was a teacher in the grammar school or the Sunday School.

Miss Pickel received a large number of postcards – a dealer in old paper had about a hundred postcards that were sent to her or presented to her.

Fortunately, Daisy did not paste her postcards into albums, and she stored them carefully.

One hopes that she, and Ida, enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving.
