Above the Clouds – Mount Washington, New Hampshire (1926)

Miss Mary Cassidy lived in Germantown, first settled as a community of German Mennonites in the early days of the Pennsylvania Colony.

Germantown is now a neighborhood within Philadelphia, PA.

In July of 1926, Mary received a postcard greeting from A. M. Martin.

On the face is a hand-colored photograph of “Lake of the Clouds” – the beautiful headwaters of the Ammonoosuc River, high on Mount Washington.

The sender writes, “Here we are on top of the world”.

According to this witness, the scene is “even grander than I ever imagined”.

Thousands of hikers and other visitors agree – Mount Washington remains a favorite destination in the White Mountains.

The postcard photograph was copyright by the Atkinson News Company in 1912; the firm, in Tilton, New Hampshire, also published the postcard.

Miss Cassidy preserved the lovely scene throughout her life.

One hopes that she and A. M. remained friends and correspondents for many years.
