Another Art Postcard for Frank – Jersey City, NJ (1909)

We met Frank Seeberger in an earlier postcard story when Frank was training with the National Guard in Sea Girt, New Jersey.

That postcard featured a charming painting of a coach and four, published by the German American Novelty Art Company.

This postcard is also an example of original postcard art.

A lone figure poles a skiff across a stream; a mill wheel is churning in the background.

It appears to be twilight, as the sun is low on the horizon and long shadows stretch across the water.

The printing is not as accomplished as that of the earlier postcard; it is possible that this postcard was printed in the United States.

(The face had also been damaged by small tears and abrasions -so the digital repairs may also distract from the quality.)

In January of 1909 (possibly, 1908), Frank was at home in Jersey City, NJ.

Jersey City lies on the lower Hudson River, opposite Manhattan.

Frank was invited to “Come up Sunday and bring your lady friend”

Apparently written by a sibling or another family member, the message explains, “we want to surprise Ma”.

One hopes that Frank was able to escort a lady friend to the family gathering, and that Ma was pleased and surprised by the event.

Frank added the postcard to his considerable collection of postcard art.
