Aunt Lou Sends a Picture of Spring – Strasburg, PA (1909)

Mr. Frank Sides lived in Strasburg, the historic borough southeast of Lancaster that is home to a famous train museum.

In July of 1909, Frank was celebrating a birthday.

To mark the occasion, Aunt Lou mailed a postcard from Lancaster.

The face of the postcard shows a smartly-dressed couple ambling along an unpaved road.

The figures are almost lost, however, in the great canopy of blossoming trees that dominates the illustration.

The postcard was made in Europe, probably Germany, but I cannot find a publisher’s mark.

The hand-colored scene seems to illustrate Spring, but it was a thoughtful remembrance of a birthday in July.

Frank must have appreciated the postcard as it was preserved in very good condition for more than a century.
