Auntie Anne at Schroon Lake – Plattsburgh, NY (1928)

Miss Eleanor B. Smith lived on Elmwood Avenue in Philadelphia, PA.

In August of 1928, Eleanor received a postcard from her Aunt Anne.

Aunt Anne wrote from Plattsburgh, a city on the northwestern shore of Lake Champlain and the northernmost city in New York State.

The face of the postcard is a hand-colored photograph of two young women canoeing on a lake.

(Strangely, the postcard is printed very carelessly – the image is not centered within the white border.)

Nevertheless, the lovely scene is titled, “Canoeing on Schroon Lake”.

“Schroon Lake” is the name of a village and of a lake within Adirondack State Park in northeast New York.

The beautiful mountain lake is a popular site for fishing and boating.

On the reverse, Aunt Anne writes that “we have settled for the night at a tourist hotel”.

The travelers have found Lake Schroon to be “a beautiful spot in the eastern Adirondacks”.

The party is preparing to travel to Montreal, the francophone city in the Canadian Province of Quebec about 130 miles to the north.

It seems as though these plans were pursued as the postcard was mailed from Plattsburg, 70 miles north of Schroon Lake.

Automobile travelers in the 1920’s were very aware of hazards of long trips on uncertain roads.

Fortunately, this journey has proceeded well; aunt Anne comments, “the Ford has acted well”.

One hopes the summer touring party reached Montreal and that all the members of the group returned safely to their homes.

Miss Smith seems to have been pleased with the postcard souvenir as she preserved it in good condition throughout her life.
