Cupid Posts the Mail – Wrightsville, PA (circa 1905)

Master Lloyd Fautz lived in Wrightsville, a picturesque town overlooking the Susquehanna River in central Pennsylvania.

Sometime around 1905, the boy received a postcard Valentine from Aunt Bettie Wallick.

It may be that Aunt Bettie lived nearby, as the Valentine was hand-delivered.

On the face of the postcard, a smiling cupid hands sealed envelopes to a dove – who appears to be the courier of love greetings.

Beside the cupid is a basket of blossoms, and a scattering of envelopes -it seems that there are many Valentine messages to be delivered.

The postcard illustration is embossed, and well-colored.

Published by the International Art Publishing Company of New York, the postcard was printed in Germany.

Although the postcard was not mailed, Aunt Bettie inscribed her name on the very margin of the reverse.

One hopes that young Lloyd was charmed by the postcard and that he and Aunt Bettie enjoyed the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.
